The Wibou surname is of French Huguenot origin, brought to America by Protestant refugees fleeing religious persecution in France. Jeanne (Jannetje) Wibou was originally from Dauoi in northern France, the daughter of Toussaint Wibou. She first married Simon Floquet in Mannheim in 1663, and after his death married Hugo Freer on January 22, 1667 in the same Mannheim congregation. Together, Hugo and Jannetje became two of the founding Patentees of New Paltz, New York, and are 5th great-grandparents of Herman Louis Wolf.
