Ruth's Ancestors
Ruth's family history is deeply rooted in German immigrant communities, with branches that also reach into French Huguenot, Dutch, English, Welsh, and Swiss heritage. Her two family lines — the Miller line and the Wolf line — represent generations of families who made their way to America and put down lasting roots.
Predominantly German Origins
Ethel Amolia Miller Line
The Miller line is almost entirely German in origin, with families like Durstein, Franck, Hahne, Langenfeld, Miller, Schaub, and Mußelmann all arriving as immigrants from German-speaking lands. Jacob, Kattler, and Welter maintained their roots in Germany itself. This line reflects the tight-knit German immigrant communities that established churches, farms, and towns across Pennsylvania and the Midwest.
German, Dutch, French & More
Herman Louis Wolf Line
Grandpa Herman descended from some of the original settlers in America - the Dutch, French Huguenots and English, who occupied the New York and Hudson River Valley area in the mid-1600's. There are some interesting stories about some of our ancestors. For instance, Peter Masten was actually fleeing the sheriff in New York because he was up to his eyeballs in debt. Meanwhile, Peter Hazelbaker was a conscripted German soldier sent to America—likely against his will—to help the British fight the colonists in the Revolutionary War. Finally, there’s the dramatic tale of German immigrant Gustavus Wolf (Herman’s grandfather). Desperate to escape his insufferable wife, Louisa, he went to extreme lengths to avoid spending time with her—first volunteering to fight in the Civil War, then abruptly fleeing to New Jersey, Australia, and eventually back to Germany.
