Mary Höck, also recorded as Mary Hague, was a German immigrant who came to America as a pre-teen from the Grand Duchy of Hesse in the mid-nineteenth century. She married the much older William Jones Jr. at the age of 18 and became part of the Jones family line documented in this genealogy.

Mary's surname Höck was sometimes anglicized or recorded as Hague in American records, and was constantly misspelled as Heck, Hoeck, Hagge, and Hock for quite some time.

Her father, Johann Lorenz Höck, and mother, Maria Katherina Kolass, were part of the wave of German emigrants who left Hesse during the mid-1800s, a period of economic hardship and political upheaval in the German states.

The Voyage

While we know it was harrowing, I am still trying to find out what  ship they sailed on for more details. It is thought, with some circumstantial evidence on Jacob Hague's death certificate, that Mary and Jacob's father did not survive the 1853 trip. Stay tuned......
